Achilles tendonitis is a painful condition in which the tendon that connects the heel to the calf muscles becomes inflamed. It often occurs in athletes, especially runners, and can be caused by overuse or injury. Symptoms include pain, swelling and sometimes redness in the Achilles tendon area. Treatment may include rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications. In more severe cases, surgery may be required.

Achilles tendonitis occurs when the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscle to the heel, becomes overused. This can be caused by repetitive strain, poor shoe choice, or inadequate warm-up before exercise.

If you have Achilles tendonitis, it is important to give your foot enough rest. Avoid excessive physical exertion and wear comfortable shoes that support the foot. You can also use ice packs for 15-20 minutes several times a day to reduce swelling and pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen can be used to relieve pain, but only under a doctor's guidance. To strengthen and stretch your Achilles tendon, I recommend seeing a physical therapist. A physical therapist can recommend customized exercises and techniques to speed recovery. In severe cases, you should definitely see an orthopedist to discuss an appropriate treatment option.

Achilles tendonitis was first described in the 19th century. The name comes from Greek mythology, where the hero Achilles was vulnerable at this point. Fact: Overuse is a common cause.
