Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication, social interactions and behavioral patterns. Individuals with autism may have difficulty understanding nonverbal signals and often exhibit repetitive behaviors.

Causes/Description:

Some possible factors include genetics, environmental toxins, birth complications, neural wiring disorders in the brain, and immune factors.

The first documented description of autism dates back to 1911 by Eugen Bleuler, who referred to the term as "schizophrenia of the child." In 1943, Leo Kanner coined the term “early childhood autism.” A significant publication came in 1977 by Bernard Rimland with the work "Autism: Developmental Disorders of the Brain". The 1980s saw a boom in behavioral and early intervention programs in the treatment of autism.
