The extensor carpi radialis is a muscle located in the forearm. It originates from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus and inserts into the base of the second metacarpal bone. The extensor carpi radialis primarily functions to extend and abduct the wrist joint, moving the hand away from the thumb side of the forearm.
