Keeping cool in TheraTogs on hot summer days

TheraTogs work hard — and working muscles make heat. Six parent-tested ways to keep your child comfortable when the temperature climbs, plus what you're allowed to modify.

A correctly fitted TheraTogs system asks the body to work: it engages under-used muscles, prompts new movement patterns and quietly corrects alignment all day long. That real work produces real warmth — which is wonderful in January and less wonderful in July. In our ORCA — Objective Reasoning & Clinical Architecture — programmes we want children wearing their system consistently, so here's how to make hot days easier.

Why TheraTogs feel warm

The material used in TheraTogs garments is an open-cell, breathable foam — it's designed to let air through. But however breathable it is, the system is still an extra layer you're wearing, and the muscle activity it provokes generates heat of its own. (The manufacturer is continuously hunting for lighter materials and alternative grip options, so the garments keep improving.)

Six ways to keep your child cool

Parent-tested cooling tips

  • Wear the tank top alone — skip the shirt over it on hot days.
  • Trim unneeded fabric — the material around the lower belly can be cut away if that area isn't part of the therapy setup.
  • Wear them wet — the paddling pool, the bath or a quick shower in the Togs works wonders.
  • Modify the front panel — remove it and replace it with suspender-style straps.
  • Swap the tank top for tape — on some setups, taping the abdominal muscles can stand in for the top layer.
  • Add cooling gear — neck wraps, cooling hats and similar products take the edge off.

Not every tip suits every configuration — a strap that looks optional may be doing the most important job. Check with your therapist before changing a setup that was fitted for a specific goal.

Can I really cut holes in it?

Yes — this surprises most parents. You can confidently cut ventilation holes in TheraTogs garments to improve airflow, and doing so does not affect your warranty in any way. The garments are made to be customised; that's the whole philosophy of the system.

When in doubt, ask us

If summer wear is becoming a daily battle, don't quietly give up on the hours — that consistency is where the results live. Ask us before you shelve the system for the season: a small modification is usually all it takes. And if a piece has genuinely reached the end of its life, you can find replacements in our TheraTogs shop.
